Steel shot is a spherical, high-carbon steel blasting media used to clean, descale, and condition metal surfaces at speed. Each particle hits the surface at high velocity, knocking off rust, mill scale, weld spatter, and old coatings — and leaving behind a smooth, densified surface with a controlled anchor profile.
The spherical shape matters. Round particles peen the surface as they hit, which compresses surface grains, reduces micro-porosity, and creates a smooth-to-medium surface texture. That texture gives industrial coatings and primers the mechanical adhesion they need without the aggressive roughness of angular steel grit.
Steel shot works in wheel blasting machines, pressure blast pots, and suction blast cabinets. In closed-loop wheel blast systems, the same batch of steel shot runs 2,000 to 3,000 cycles before breakdown — making it one of the most economical blast media choices for continuous production environments.

Steel shot is the preferred blasting media for any application where surface cleanliness and production speed matter more than extreme surface roughness.
Fabricators use S-230 to S-330 grade shot in wheel blast machines to descale hot-rolled plate and sections before primer application. A single pass through a roller conveyor wheel blast machine at 70–75 m/min production speed achieves Sa 2.5 cleanliness on standard structural steel. This is the most common steel shot application in Indian industry.
Iron and steel castings come out of moulds with sand, oxide scale, and flash attached. Shot blasting with S-390 to S-660 grade removes all of it in 4–8 minutes per batch in a tumble blast machine or hanger type blast cabinet. Steel shot also improves casting surface fatigue resistance through compressive stress — the shot peening effect is a bonus, not a side effect.
Auto component plants blast cast iron and forged steel parts with S-170 to S-280 grade shot before machining or coating. The process removes heat treatment scale, improves dimensional consistency, and creates a uniform surface for subsequent operations. Shipyards use steel shot in blast rooms and open blasting rigs to clean ship hull plates to Sa 2.5 and Sa 3 before anti-corrosion coating. Steel shot quality is not visible to the eye. A bag of undersized, over-hard, or poorly distributed shot looks identical to a certified product — until it breaks down too fast, clogs separator screens, or fails to hit your surface profile target.

What grade of steel shot should I use for structural steel fabrication? For standard structural steel plate and sections before primer application, S-230 or S-280 grade is the most common specification. How many times can steel shot be recycled in a blasting machine? In a closed-loop wheel blast system with a working separator and magnetic separator, steel shot runs 2,000 to 3,000 cycles before the batch requires replacement. Actual cycle life depends on the shot hardness, the substrate being blasted, separator efficiency, and whether the machine removes broken particles from the working mix. Broken and undersized shot must be continuously removed — running degraded shot lowers surface profile quality and increases media consumption.
What is the difference between steel shot and steel grit? Steel shot is spherical and produces a smooth, peened surface with a moderate anchor profile (Ra 12–75 µm). Steel grit is angular and cuts aggressively into the surface, producing a rougher, sharper profile (Ra 50–125 µm). Shot is used where a clean, smooth surface is needed — such as automotive, aerospace, or foundry applications. Grit is used where maximum coating adhesion through surface roughness is required, such as tank linings, ship hulls under heavy-duty coating systems, and pipe coating operations.
Does steel shot contain silica? Is it safe to use? Steel shot contains no free silica. It is manufactured from high-carbon steel and does not generate silica dust during blasting. This makes it significantly safer than silica sand from a respiratory health standpoint. However, steel shot blasting still generates metallic dust and should be used with proper ventilation, respiratory protection, and PPE per local occupational health regulations. All Vands steel shot shipments include an MSDS detailing safe handling, storage, and disposal.
What documentation do you provide with steel shot orders? Every commercial shipment includes a sieve analysis certificate confirming particle size distribution within SAE J827 tolerance, a hardness test certificate, a chemical composition report, and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
