What Is Aluminium Oxide Abrasive?

Aluminium oxide abrasive is a synthetic mineral compound made by fusing bauxite ore in an electric arc furnace at temperatures above 2,000°C. The result is a dense, hard, angular particle that cuts aggressively on contact with metal, ceramic, stone, or composite surfaces.

The technical name is aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), also written as aluminum oxide. It is sold under several trade names — corundum, aloxide, and alox — but they all refer to the same base material. Two main grades dominate industrial use: brown aluminium oxide and white aluminium oxide. Both are hard, but they differ in purity, friability, and the applications they suit best.

Brown aluminium oxide contains titanium oxide as a minor component, which makes the particle tough and less brittle. It is the workhorse grade — used for heavy blasting, grinding wheel production, coated abrasives, and refractory linings. White aluminium oxide is purer (99%+ Al₂O₃), friable, and self-sharpening. Aluminium Oxide Grades We Supply — Brown and White

Brown Aluminium Oxide (BAO)

Brown aluminium oxide is the standard industrial grade. It has a hardness of 9 Mohs and an Al₂O₃ content of 95–97%, with the remainder being titanium oxide (TiO₂) and minor oxides. The titanium content adds toughness, which means the particle resists fracture during impact and gives more cutting cycles before breakdown.

We supply brown aluminium oxide in grit sizes 16, 24, 36, 46, 60, 80, 120, 180, and 220. Coarser grits (16–46) are used in blasting cabinets for aggressive surface preparation on steel, aluminum, and titanium components. Medium grits (60–120) are used in grinding wheels, coated abrasive belts, and surface conditioning. Fine grits (150–220) go into lapping, polishing, and final finishing operations.

Bulk density runs between 1.6 and 1.9 g/cm³ depending on grit size. Melting point is 2,050°C, which makes brown aluminium oxide suitable for refractory and kiln furniture applications as well.

White Aluminium Oxide (WAO)

White aluminium oxide is the high-purity grade. Al₂O₃ content is 99%+ with minimal iron and titanium. The higher purity makes the particle friable — it fractures more easily under impact, constantly exposing fresh, sharp cutting edges. This property is what makes white aluminium oxide the preferred choice for precision grinding and sensitive surface finishing.

How Aluminium Oxide Is Used in Industrial Applications

Aluminium oxide works across a wider range of applications than almost any other abrasive. The same base material, in different grit sizes and grades, handles tasks from rough blast cleaning to final optical polishing.

Surface Preparation and Blast Cleaning

In blast cabinet operations, aluminium oxide at 36–80 grit removes rust, scale, paint, and oxide layers from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and titanium parts. It creates a sharp, angular anchor profile that gives paint, powder coat, thermal spray, and adhesive bonding an excellent surface to grip. The achievable surface profile ranges from Ra 1.5 µm with fine grits to Ra 6.5 µm with coarse grits on carbon steel.

Grinding and Cutting Wheel Production

Brown aluminium oxide is one of the two primary bonded abrasive grain materials (the other being silicon carbide). Grinding wheel manufacturers bond aluminium oxide grains with vitrified ceramic, resinoid, or rubber bonds to produce bench grinder wheels, angle grinder discs, and centreless grinding wheels.

Wheels made with brown aluminium oxide work best on high-tensile steel, tool steel, and hard alloys. White aluminium oxide wheels are chosen for stainless steel, high-speed steel (HSS), and titanium where the heat generated during grinding must be minimised to prevent workpiece damage.

Coated Abrasives — Belts, Discs, and Sheets

Aluminium oxide grain is the most common abrasive in sanding belts, flap discs, fibre discs, and abrasive sheets. For steel and wood, brown aluminium oxide in 40–120 grit gives fast stock removal. For finishing passes, 150–220 grit gives a smooth, consistent surface.

Aluminium Oxide vs Other Abrasives — Which One Is Right for You?

The right abrasive depends on what you are processing, what surface condition you need, and how much the media costs per usable cycle. Aluminium oxide is not always the cheapest option per kilogram, but it is often the cheapest option per square metre treated or per part processed — because it lasts longer and cuts more consistently than mineral alternatives.

Compared to garnet, aluminium oxide is harder (9 Mohs vs 7.5–8 Mohs) and cuts faster on hard metals. Garnet is preferred for mild steel pipeline work and waterjet cutting where a silica-free mineral media is specified. Aluminium oxide is the better choice for non-ferrous metals, precision components, and any application where the surface profile needs fine control.

Compared to steel grit, aluminium oxide is harder but lighter. Steel grit has a much higher mass per particle and creates deep anchor profiles on heavy steel structures. Aluminium oxide suits enclosed cabinet blasting on smaller, precision components where steel contamination of the base material is a concern.

Compared to silicon carbide, aluminium oxide is tougher but less hard. Silicon carbide at 9.5 Mohs is harder and cuts faster on carbides, ceramics, and glass. But silicon carbide fractures quickly and is not recyclable in the same way aluminium oxide is. For most metal surface preparation tasks, aluminium oxide gives a better cost-per-cycle outcome.

Compared to copper slag, aluminium oxide costs more per kilogram but far less per square metre when recycled. Copper slag is single-use. Aluminium oxide in a closed blast cabinet gives 4–6 cycles. On any high-volume production blast operation with a cabinet or chamber, the switch from copper slag to aluminium oxide typically pays back in 3–6 months.

Grit Size Guide — What Each Grade Does

Grit size is the single most important variable after abrasive type. Choosing the wrong grit wastes time and money on both ends — too coarse leaves a surface that is hard to finish cleanly, too fine slows cut rate and raises operating time per part.

Grit 16 to 24 is coarse. It removes heavy scale, thick paint, weld spatter, and deep pitting fast. The surface left behind is rough, which suits thermal spray coatings, heavy-duty epoxy systems, or applications that need maximum mechanical adhesion.

Grit 36 to 60 is medium. It handles standard surface preparation for paint and powder coat, removes light rust and mill scale efficiently, and creates a consistent anchor profile. This range covers the bulk of blast cabinet work in fabrication shops.

Grit 80 to 120 is fine. It produces a smooth, bright surface with a lower profile, suitable for anodising preparation on aluminum, pre-plating cleaning, and surface conditioning before precision coating.

Grit 150 to 220 is very fine. It is used for final finishing passes, deburring, and pre-polish preparation on components that need a visual finish. At 220 grit, aluminium oxide leaves a surface close to a dull polish on stainless steel.

Grits above 220 — 320, 400, 600, and beyond — move into lapping and polishing territory. These ultra-fine powders are used in slurry applications, not dry blasting. White aluminium oxide in these sizes is the standard choice for optical and precision engineering lapping.
